Travel essentials

A little preparation.
A much better journey.

Practical principles for touring in a 4×4: thoughtful planning, permitted roads and respect for the people and landscapes along the way.

01

Plan the road, not just the destination

Build generous days with time for stops, walking and a change of plan. A short distance on a mountain map can take much longer than expected.

  • Download offline maps and carry a backup.
  • Confirm access with the land manager or a knowledgeable local guide.
  • Check mountain weather, snow, washouts and opening notices before departure.
02

Drive where you are welcome

Use existing roads that are open to your vehicle. A visible track, a navigation suggestion or a past tyre mark does not establish a right of access.

  • Respect gates, signs, private land and grazing animals.
  • Never drive through meadows, peatlands, riverbeds or walking-only trails.
  • Keep dust and noise down around homes, hikers and livestock.
03

Camp with permission

A beautiful clearing is not automatically a campsite. Rules differ between countries, municipalities, protected areas and individual properties.

  • Prefer established campsites or ask the landowner and local authority.
  • Do not light fires where restricted; use a stove only where allowed.
  • Take all rubbish and wastewater away; protect riverbanks and water sources.
04

Prepare the vehicle

Choose terrain that fits the vehicle, the tyres and the least experienced person in the group. Turn back early when the margin disappears.

  • Carry drinking water, warm layers, first aid and a properly secured spare.
  • Use suitable recovery equipment and training; avoid improvised recoveries.
  • Refuel before remote stretches and share a realistic travel plan.
05

Travel across borders thoughtfully

Keep international travel on official border crossings. Check current entry, insurance, registration and driving-document requirements with the relevant authorities before departure.

  • Carry documents for the driver, vehicle and any required owner authorisation.
  • Allow extra time at borders; avoid planning around unverified crossing hours.
  • Do not carry a route across an unstaffed mountain boundary.
06

Make the stop part of the journey

Park once and explore on foot. Buy local produce, use local accommodation and ask before photographing residents or religious services.

  • Dress and behave respectfully at churches and monasteries.
  • Give wildlife distance; never feed bears or other wild animals.
  • In Bosnia & Herzegovina, use locally verified routes and take mine-warning signs seriously.
